Formatting Tips to Be a Good Guest Blogger

As someone who accepts guest blogs we have a few tips for how to be a good guest blog submitter. Considering the time it takes to find and establish a relationship with someone with a blog in your niche who is willing to accept your material it makes a lot of sense to keep that person happy.

Use the following tips when submitting your material and your posts hosts will love you!

  • Send the Material in a .txt File

Why? Microsoft Word has a ton of extra code so it's not a good practice to copy and paste from Word into most website content management systems. When we get submissions in Word, the first thing we have to do is paste them into a very basic text editing program like Notepad or Text Wrangler. Not only does this strip out the excess code, but it also removes any formatting you may have added like hyperlinks and bold.

  • Put Your Hyperlink in HTML Format

Why? It's let's us copy and paste you article in one step and it saves you the time of creating a hyperlink in Word that will be undone when we paste the article into a text editor.

Many people we get submissions from are writers not techies so it's understandable that they don't know the HTML format for a hyperlink (though it's easy to find  online) so here it is: <a href=">keyword anchor text</a>. That's it. Insert this with your information so the sentence reads normally. The "keyword anchor text" part between the > and < brackets are the words that will be hyperlinked. Doing it this way will also make sure we don't make a typo when we insert the link that was lost in the Word strip down.

  • Include an Image File

Why? Blog owners want a nice looking blog with images to break up the text so their readers have something to look at. If you don't provide and image, then we have to go looking for an image - from any of the free image resources that you also have a available.

Since a relevant well-named image helps out you, the guest poster, too you should include one with your submission.

  • Use a SMALL image file

Why? It's going to be a small sized image used to accompany an article and it needs to be a small file size to load fast and not slow down the site. Sometimes the guest poster will submit large, high resolution photos, maybe to have something high quality to go with their post or because they download that size and didn't the time to make it smaller. You should.

Your image doesn't need to be more than 250 to 300px wide or high. Use MS Paint or other free software like Skitch (easy) or Gimp (advanced) to make the image size smaller. And please crop out extra background to the top, bottom and sides if it's not needed to convey the main point of the image.

  • Give Your Image a Good Filename

Why? It's good SEO for search engines and visitors. The filename is going to be seen when visitors mouse over the image. The images we receive almost always have names like gy579.jpg. We have to change this because we don't want our visitors to see that filename if they put their mouse on the image.

Also, we want our page to be optimized to your topic. If you want us to publicize your article on pregnancy tips name the photo you send "pregnancytips.jpg" it helps you and it helps us help you, which makes us want to work with you again :-)

How To Get A List Of All The Links From Your Website or Blog

  • If you are using WordPress, the RSS feed for your blog posts (only, not pages) is found at This is the RSS feed for your blog posts only, it will not include your site's Pages.
  • To get a list of all Posts and Pages from your WordPress site you have to have an XML sitemap creator plugin installed. Then the link to all your Pages and Posts will be This will also work with any other type of site that uses an XML sitemap.
  • You'll only need to submit one of the above URLs - choose the the .xml link to submit all your site's pages and blog posts, or use the URL to submit only your blog posts.
  • Web 2.0 sites such as Squidoo, HubPages and Tumblr also have RSS feeds containing lists of your submitted content as do content sharing sites such as EzineArticles. To Remove Irrelevant Pages Before RSS Distribution

When you look at links in the options you'll see that it contains all the links on your site including pages such as About Us, Privacy Policy, Terms & Conditions, etc.

If you don't want to include these pages in the RSS feed you'll be mass distributing then highlight all the links, paste them into a spreadsheet and delete the irrelevant links. Then copy the remaining links and paste them into the RSS Holder site shown below to create one link to submit to the Bulk Ping RSS Submit page (not the BulkPing site!) discussed below.

Also Mass Distribute All Your Content Distribution Links Via RSS

In addition to submitting the RSS feeds of your website, blog and specific  content sharing sites  you can s  and submitting them to RSS directories, you'll probably also want to do the same with your content distribution.

For a lot of people trying to get in the habit of blogging and becoming active on social media the hardest part is answering the question, “What do I write about?”Woman and clown in living room When you consider that writer’s block happens to experienced novelists, we shouldn’t feel bad when this common problem happens to us regular folks too.

An experience that helped us pick blog topics that connect with our audience happened when we met our neighbors the doctor and the clown.

Getting to know these unique neighbors when we first moved to California gave us a great reminder of the importance of getting outside ourselves and to take in the world through the eyes of others.

Be Neighborly

What does it mean to be neighborly? It means find areas of common interest, offer to help and be willing to share freely.

Do you ever start thinking about how to grow your business and find yourself thinking in terms like, “prospects”, “leads”, “conversions” and “sales”? As business owners it’s easy to fall into the habit of commodifying customers at times.

These words are a normal part of business and marketing language and there’s nothing wrong with using them in a strategic planning setting.

But the danger comes if we get stuck on this type of thinking and it becomes a roadblock to creatively connecting with our customers based on their traits and tastes as individuals.

It’s cliché to say “treat your customers like people” but the cliché comes in handy when it’s time to come up with creative articles or blog ideas or think of topics to share on social media that will connect with people.

How To Pick Blog Topics - What The Doctor and The Clown Taught Us

There’s a reason we think of this as being “neighborly”. I’ve mentioned elsewhere before that when my wife and I first moved to Southern California we settled in the bohemian beach town of Venice. In the front apartment of the divided house we shared with four other tenants lived the doctor and the clown. He’s a neurologist and she’s a birthday party clown! Classic Venice. It’s a great community. We love to refer them to them with our other friends as “the doctor and the clown”.

Although we’ve all since moved away we’re still great friends and we often talk about business and marketing because we’re all business owners. Silly Sally the birthday party clown is a fascinating business study to me because it’s a subject I know so little about.

Find Areas Of Common Interest

When we first started talking, Sally, like so many of us, struggled to come up with blog topics for her business because she is so familiar with her line of work and figures what is there to say about balloon twisting, puppet shows and facepainting that’s worth writing about?

But as someone not accustomed to the details of her job my wife and I didn’t know to think about the details of her shows and instead thought about her customers as moms.

These are moms who are busy because they have too many stops in their day. Moms who keep calendars in the kitchen whose boxes are filled in with scribbled dates and times for play dates, soccer practice and piano lesson start times and doctor and dentist appointments. Moms who have to make the budget last, and wish they had more time for themselves to relax.

Offer To Help

These moms need help! Sally’s right, they probably don’t want to read about balloon twisting and facepainting. Except for the few moments they’ll devote to hiring a clown, these topics aren’t relevant in their world.

But you know what would be an interesting read for these busy moms? Busy mom topics; like “Where to Take an Adult Vacation the Kids Will Love” (try Napa Valley – I read it in a magazine).

Time management is probably another rich topic and with smartphones and tablets giving us access to the internet from the sidelines of a soccer field there’s probably a lot on this topic that can be researched, written and shared. And this is just scratching the surface in the busy-parent topic. Just think about their struggles with nutrition, school, kid’s clothes and so much more.

Although these topics don’t have anything to do with clowning for a child’s birthday party, they do give Sally an excellent opening to offer her mom’s or parents (formerly her “clients” or “prospects”) helpful tips in a way that’s well outside the limited “must-hire-a-clown” moments she might otherwise try to connect with them.

Be Willing To Share Freely

Entering your customer’s lives outside the context of your business not only expands your options for blog posts and article topics it also makes it much easier to find relevant things to share on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Pinterest (do you really have to use all these tools? The more you use, the more people you reach – see our list of tools at bottom that make social sharing easier).

In Sally’s case instead of searching Twitter for tweets about “facepainting”, “clowns” or “birthday party” – things that are only of interest to her clients once a year – she can instead look for some of the items mentioned above: how to help your child with school work, getting your children to eat right, kids fashion on a limited budget, etc. etc.

Remember, Sally doesn’t want to be limited to the clown business – she is now living in the busy-parent world.

Easily Join Their Social Circles

Do you now have to spend all day reading mommy and daddy blogs? Not at all, a better way is to conduct the search using Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest and Google Plus and then Friend, Follow, Pin or Plus good sources. This will put their posts from these sources into your social media feed and make it much easier and faster for you to push a button to share items of interest with your growing parent social group.

People want to do business with people in their same social group. When your neighbor-prospects start to realize she’s hanging out in the same places they are and sharing similar topics, you’ll be easily integrated into their social circle, just like the friendly helpful neighbor you are!

Building your website or business solely on the basis of achieving Google rankings is a very dangerous model to follow. Oh, we understand the appeal completely. The volume of traffic Google can send you is enormously  attractive. But the pain of losing that traffic and revenue when Google takes their attention away can be a lot to bear. It can be fatal even if you haven't diversified your traffic stream.

Of course there's no reason to shun Google either because when they do feature your material prominently it provides a nice extra traffic boost.

The ideal situation is to develop strong relationships with people in parallel industries (strategic partners), create informative and helpful content, and get your material featured on others' websites as guest blogs or informative articles.

How To Benefit From Content Marketing And Google Traffic

The way to get both things at once is to invest in quality content and share it widely in locations where it's likely to garner its own traffic that leads back to your site.

The Two Most Important Traits Of Quality Content

The guidelines below say a lot about what good content should look like from Google's point of view, but below are the two most important content traits from your point of view, which should answer the question "How will this content work for me?"

New Actionable Information - The first way your content is going to work for you is by adding a lot of value for the reader. Don't just rehash known facts as too many online marketing forums suggest - put some real thought into telling your reader and prospect something they didn't know. You want something that makes them think, "Huh, I'm glad I know that. This person seems to know what they're talking about."

And remember, the information you present doesn't have to be new to field, it just has to be new and useful to the reader researching the topic.

This part is important for two reasons - First, because if your content is recycled material readers already know, they're going to be gone in a click. But more importantly, think of the value of high-quality content from the a potential strategic partner's point of view; they want something that brings value to the visitors too. If you would be proud to offer your content to them in person, you're on the right track. If you're relieved you're offering it online and hoping someone somewhere picks it up no one probably will pick it up.

Leave Them Wanting More - After catching the reader's interest and establishing your expertise at the end of the article mention a few other items they really should know about and say where they can go to learn more, which will be links to your site, preferably to the page promoting your mailing list (more free content but this time at the price of their email address).

Here are Google's Quality Content Guidelines the questions Google listed last year that one could use to assess the quality of a page or an article:

  • Would you trust the information presented in this article?
  • Is this article written by an expert or enthusiast who knows the topic well, or is it more shallow in nature?
  • Does the site have duplicate, overlapping, or redundant articles on the same or similar topics with slightly different keyword variations?
  • Would you be comfortable giving your credit card information to this site?
  • Does this article have spelling, stylistic, or factual errors?
  • Are the topics driven by genuine interests of readers of the site, or does the site generate content by attempting to guess what might rank well in search engines?
  • Does the article provide original content or information, original reporting, original research, or original analysis?
  • Does the page provide substantial value when compared to other pages in search results?
  • How much quality control is done on content?
  • Does the article describe both sides of a story?
  • Is the site a recognized authority on its topic?
  • Is the content mass-produced by or outsourced to a large number of creators, or spread across a large network of sites, so that individual pages or sites don’t get as much attention or care?
  • Was the article edited well, or does it appear sloppy or hastily produced?
  • For a health related query, would you trust information from this site?
  • Would you recognize this site as an authoritative source when mentioned by name?
  • Does this article provide a complete or comprehensive description of the topic?
  • Does this article contain insightful analysis or interesting information that is beyond obvious?
  • Is this the sort of page you’d want to bookmark, share with a friend, or recommend?
  • Does this article have an excessive amount of ads that distract from or interfere with the main content?
  • Would you expect to see this article in a printed magazine, encyclopedia or book?
  • Are the articles short, unsubstantial, or otherwise lacking in helpful specifics?
  • Are the pages produced with great care and attention to detail vs. less attention to detail?
  • Would users complain when they see pages from this site?

Of course, Google uses over 200 signals in all, but that should get you started on thinking about your site’s content.
