Get Links And Traffic Fast With RSS And Web 2.0

Pete Semple

Squidoo logoCreating content shows the world how smart and cool and knowledgeable you are about your line of work, but creating and sharing content is a lot of work. Use these tips to spread your content more quickly and easily. This lets you get more exposure and get links and traffic fast for the marketing material you've created. Which means you can get back to work on your business.

A Quick Aside - The tips we offer all over this site are intended to do more than how to build a million spammy backlinks to trick Google into ranking you higher. Instead, our approach to backlink building is to Keep It Simple (so it actually gets done), Maximize Your Efforts so that the links and information you're sharing (content) serve the dual purpose of bringing people and backlinks to your site, and to Make Ethical and Worthwhile Contributions that enhance your brand's reputation by offering value to the people who come across them who then hopefully become your customers.

How To Use RSS To Post Content To Your 2.0 Sites

Affiliorama marketing site logoThe first resource is this page on Affiliorama detailing how to use RSS streams to feed content and links into your other 2.0 sites. This is an excellent, step-by-step tutorial on how to cross link a few sites to quickly share your content.

Affiliorama is a site geared toward affiliate marketers but there is a TON of information that small business marketers can learn from hanging out in the affiliate marketing forums.

If all this web 2.0/RSS talk is gobbledeguk to you right now, think of it this way - you have a blog, then you find Squidoo and HubPages (two of many "web 2.0" sites) and you realize they're like having two more blogs but instead of existing alone in the depths of cyberspace they're in a mall (it's a blog mall, work with me here!) where there are already a lot of people walking around checking things out.

Obviously this blog mall idea presents exciting opportunities, but who wants to have to update three or more blogs?!

That's where RSS comes in. RSS was talked about a lot a few years ago and people still use it to read selected feeds in iGoogle.

But for this use, instead of reading an RSS feed you're going to be provider of the RSS feed and use it to cross-post content to your new accounts at these web 2.0 sites where readers (and search engines) will see your content with call to action and backlinks to your site.

Send Your Ustreatm.tv Updates To Facebook And Twitter

What is Ustream.tv? It's another very cool web 2.0 site that allows you to share video and all sorts of content. Create a profile (tie it to your Facebook to Keep It Simple) then link with your Facebook and Twitter accounts when it prompts you to during the sign up process. OK, technically this isn't an RSS tie in, but it is another way to make one update turn into three updates which fits under our principle to Maximize Efforts.

Two Ways To Use Web 2.0 Sites For Content and Backlinks

The sites mentioned here, Squidoo, Hubpages and Ustream are similar in use to Facebook or a YouTube Channel. They can be used frequently and customized to reflect your tastes and you can spend hours a day in there making friends and uploading content. Should you? Maybe.

Alternatively they can be used to create quick accounts, tie-in RSS feeds or use them to update one with cross links to each other, or you can submit manual updates to them periodically and then move on with your business and your other marketing tasks.

These sites do their best to make them appealing to viewers as well as content creators so that people spend more time on them. Squidoo for example has a lot of fun little characters and a points system that makes it enjoyable to use. But ultimately it's up to you to decide the value of these tools and adjust your time commitment to them accordingly.

How Much Time Should We Spend Updating Social Media and Web 2.0 Sites?

How you use them and how much time to spend working on customizing the interfaces, adding content and interacting with others should be measured like any other business proposition - what's the payoff?

A few ways to determine the value:

  • Does the medium reflect your target? For example, high-net-worth people needing asset management might not be on Squidoo. But moms might be if they are your target. And high-net-worth people might be on one of these social media/web 2.0 sites to read about their hobbies and they could see that you're on there too and catch one of your videos or articles.
  • How many other distractions are present? HubPages will have competitors' ads running on the side. But on the plus side, you can put your own links and eBay products right into your own post.
  • Test - Intuition and knowledge of your customers is going to lead you most of the time on which sites are best for you to get heavily involved in. But we always recommend testing. You just never know and there's nothing like having the data to be sure about the marketing decisions you're making. Post a few things and then later check your analytics to see if the level rerrals you're getting. Many of the sites themselves also have view counts.
  • Limitations on your time - There are only so many hours a day, if your target is social in these locations, get in there and chat them and be an active contributor. If you're not seeing the traffic or interactions you can post less for backlink purposes and decide to stop using them.
  • Ease of use - Facebook is one the very easy end. Squidoo takes some fiddling to get the content in right. And HubPages is about in the middle in terms of uploading content quickly.

A Wordpress Plugin To Update All Your Web 2.0 Sites At Once

We love the Wordpress plugin that you post to the top 12 web 2.0 sites at once. It is $47 but there's a 60-day free trial and this company offers a lot of support and is well respected. It walks you through setting up the accounts too and even tests that they're working before you starting posting.

If you're posting in Wordpress already, you could no other posts around the web and still get a blurb and links to your content on about a dozen other sites. We use it every time we post.

Easy Ways To Spread Your Existing Content

Pete Semple

"Content" are the words, pictures and images you use to share information, inform customers and showcase your knowledge online. Sharing RSS Aggregator Example iGooglecontent is the backbone of internet marketing because it spreads your information to more people and provides backlinks that help Google value your site's popularity. But sharing content can be time consuming if you're manually submitting it to multiple sites by hand.

Using RSS To Share Your Content Online Fast

Manual submissions are still a good and necessary way to gain visibility and traffic, don't get us wrong, but there's an easy first step to quickly share your content and have submit it to RSS feeds (sites that accept content via RSS - Real Simple Syndication).

(The photo at the right is an example of RSS aggregater iGoogle. It shows how an RSS aggregater can be used to read articles from many source on one page.)

How To Invite Your Site's Visitors To Get Your Content Via RSS

Internet marketers know that RSS feeds are a great way to share your information online. Other sites get information through RSS which presents an opportunity for your content to be picked up by them and shared to their viewers. Symbol to Get RSS Subscribers

Visitors to your site can also add your RSS feed to their RSS aggregator such as iGoogle (example pictured above) so that your information appears in iGoogle or other "feed aggregator" they may

Fast Way to Submit Your Content to RSS Feeds

If you're using Wordpress for your website there's an easy to automatically submit your content to as many RSS feed-accepting sites as you can find (and we provide a list of dozens below you can plug in).

To enter the list below and have your posts automatically submitted go to: Settings -> General. At the bottom of the page it says, Update Services and there's a box where you can put a list of URLs to receive your content updates.

**IMPORTANT: Now, the box is only 2 inches tall giving the impression that you should only add a few sites in there, however, anything you add in there will scroll so you can add as much as you want - and you should!

What Results Can You Expect From RSS Syndication?

A little. Sorry, wish we could say it would leads to blowout levels of traffic, but nothing does. Quality, safe, internet marketing is performed by building one brick at a time into your structure.

There really are no shortcuts anymore (on a side note - a great little private blog network called Build My Rank bit the dust this week. Google de-indexed their entire network of blogs. And that means Google has a list of their customers - who have not yet faced de-indexing).

So this is another piece in the Slow and Steady share and build content sharing and backlinking strategy that we recommend.
