An Open Letter To An Internet Marketer

Pete Semple

This is my reply to someone looking to make money online. Since I'd already written it out I thought I'd share it with others online. Hopefully you'll find some helpful information and resources. Hello,

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad you found the DIY SEO Guide useful. There is a TON of info on sites like but it can be overwhelming.

So let's get down to the basics. I'm going to recommend you spend some money here. Not all of it with me.

You can try it the free way BUT it will cost you WAY more time than it's worth. There are a lot of questionable products out there, without a doubt. I want you to avoid them. But don't spend nothing, That hurts too. Use your best judgement...

You want to get into an e-commerce business. It all starts with KEYWORDS. My suggestion is to first find out what people are looking for, then go plant a site where you'll have a chance of being seen.

Sale-able Product -> Keywords -> on-site and off-site SEO = income.

Chances are there's a lot of competition for the best keywords in your field. HOWEVER, you can skirt around the obvious keywords to find the hidden gems.

The FREE way - Google Keywords Tool - - This will tell you Volume and CPC, but it WON'T tell you Rankability (what are the chances you can actually be ranked for that term?)

BTW - You'll need to figure if you're trying to be seen by people already IN Thailand (locals or tourists on their mobiles) or from people yet to leave like folks in the US or the UK. Or maybe these are basic sales sites anyone can lookup and buy…

We also use this tool to find great keywords FAST (or "super fast", as we say in L.A.).

They have some agonizing retail choices from free to a $97 one-time payment. Try the free version first, right? But if that doesn't work out, the software is worth $97 because with it you can perform a wide search fast. Then simply download it as a CSV to sort it.

You'll likely see that there are some HUGE search volumes for words tied directly to your product or service. But don't put up those pages yet! There's one more step...

Those keywords are likely taken. Instead plug those keywords into Alex's Keyword Competition Analyzer.

I wish I had bought the right tools in the beginning. I fell for a lot of push-button plugins sold as WSOs that did nothing for me. Hopefully you see that this process makes sense - "Sale-able Product -> Keywords -> on-site and off-site SEO = income."

We've seen WSO's that offer to put money in your account - for a sign up form! Um, Don't you need a good product and traffic first, before you're going to get rich from sign ups?? Yes, you do.

Alex updates the Keyword Competition Analyzer, often and he sometimes even answers support emails himself. You won't be frustrated if you buy this. It works. I use it to find opportunities for clients all the time.

So now you have found your keywords!

  • Write good copy.
  • Capture email addresses with an optin form and Aweber - this is my affiliate link. Their service is only $19 a month.
  • Every email service, AWeber, mailchimp, GetResponse - they all have crap optin forms. Go to "Warriors for hire" and buy good ones. On my site you can see one I bought on Fiverr. It's not great. And because it was on Fiverr, there were no revisions. So, think about what you are paying for…
  • You want to build a list. Getting traffic is a bear. Offer value and get those visitors to sign up!!
  • Don't look to get-rich-quick sites and keywords and products. Marketing and sales are HARD. Internet marketing is the same as real life - have a good product you love, or don't expect riches, right?? There's no easy money.

Let's stay in touch and keep talking. I'm sure you are working hard to make this happen. Friends and family helped me a lot along the way and I want to pay them back by helping others.

What else can I help you with?

- Pete

Thanks and keep in touch

According To Matt Cutts, Press Release Links Won't Help Rankings?

Pete Semple

Here's the intriguing headline from SEO Roundtable, "Google Cutts: Links From Press Releases Won't Help". But then SEO Consult tested this premise and found press release links did help rankings.

So What Gives? Do Press Release Links Work?

Matt Cutts GoogleCould this be true at all?

Couldn't these links still count due to other variables? For example, it could be that when press releases are picked up by major news sites and sources they can't help but have an impact (via "link juice") on your site's ranking.

And what if a smaller blog or news site republishes a news story that had been picked up by bigger one first?

In other words, things tend to go viral and there's a lot of, "If someone bigger than me found it interesting, I should publish it too" mentality out there. This is fine, in fact it's the way news has always traveled.

If it is the case that the press release, and the links inside, get spread far and wide, of course it would have to help your rankings, right? Right.

And these links and exposure get you direct traffic from people interested enough in the topic to do read the article, which is it's own excellent traffic source.

And Then There is The Actual Quote...

Matt Cutts didn't exactly say press release links won't help your rankings. He said something about not assuming links from press release sites will help your rankings.

So What About The Test?

Well when SEO Consult did a test of their keyword in the rankings after uploading press releases only to press release sites (apparently none were picked up and redistributed). Their word did appear highly in the rankings.

So what's it all mean? Back to the points above and a few more. They picked a weird word so there wasn't much competition. And there's the "Google Dance", the period of time when Google notices new items and ranks them high briefly (maybe in case they're breaking news?) before putting them away on a page further back in the results.

Maybe Google isn't 100% how their algo works. Or maybe Cutts isn't, or maybe he's misleading us! :-) LOL, the wonderful world of Google.

Like so many things in life, watch what they do, not what they say.

How To Get Email Sign Ups In Comments Form

Pete Semple

Have you noticed that some sites have little check boxes near their comments form to invite commenters to join a mailing list? Usually it says, "Notify me of new posts by email"?Notify me of new posts JetPack Plugin Inviting people who make comments to subscribe is a great subscriber or list-building tool because visitors who scroll to the bottom of a page to comment are usually very interested in your subject.

These are your ideal readers to stay in touch with a newsletter, automatic email response system and to send your new blog posts.

But how do you get those check boxes by the Comments form? And how do you integrate them with a mailing list?

Three Tools To Offer Email Sign Up Checkboxes At Comments Form - Jetpack, AWeber and WP Subscribers

Add Blog Subscribers Only, Limited But Free Option

Jetpack for Wordpress.orgJetpack for - Jetpack is a built-in feature of (their public-hosted blog system). However, there IS a free Jetpack plugin that's available to (the self-hosted platform) users too.

Not everyone seems to know this judging from the number of posts by people searching for this feature in the WordPress forum. Unfortunately there were some erroneous responses that self-hosted users can't use this feature, but it's not true. Just install the free Jetpack plugin.

There are a lot of great features inside Jetpack - it's basically like having 12 or more plugins in one. The feature that you want to activate once you install the plugin is, "Subscriptions".

Jetpack Good For Blog Posts Only, Not for Email Marketing

Although we recommend installing Jetpack for the many free features it offers, it's not the ideal way to build a subscriber list because you can't delete names (spammers for example) and you can't transfer your subscriber list to a newsletter list or set them up for an automatic welcome email series. They will get your blog updates only.

This is major hindrance that prevents you from using Jetpack for professional email marketing to these visitors. Surely there must be a way, you say? We thought so too, but read here what the Jetpack developers say themselves,

PROS - Free and easy to add a newsletter, comment or blog post sign up optin in the comments section or via a sidebar widget

CONS - Not possible to delete subscribers (spammers) and there's no way to easily export your subscriber list to a more professional email marketing platform like AWeber, GetResponse, etc.

AweberBuild An Email Marketing List

Sign Up for our newsletter comment checkbox AWeber

AWeber is one of the most popular email marketing platforms out there because it's easy to use (very beginner friendly with simple setup wizards) and it's only $19 a month for your first 500 subscribers. They even offer a one-month trial for $1 here.

Once you're an Aweber customer, download their free AWeber Web Form Plugin which will enable you to place optin forms on your site in the comments section or in the widget area.

In the plugin's Settings is where you can specify the list and text you want to use to get people to subscribe at the Comments form.Email sign up options to appear in Comments area

PROS - Easy to use email marketing service, gives you ability to send beautifully formatted newsletters, set automatic followup emails sequences, and add, delete or transfer your subscribers and lists. Also has email signups checkbox option.

CONS - AWeber is a paid email/newsletter service that starts at $19 a month for your first 500 subscribers (see their $1 one-month trial offer).

WP Subscribers - Professional Optin Forms

WPSubscriber OptinFormsMaximize Email Sign Ups with Professional Optin Options

WP Subscribers - Is a paid plugin that gives your email sign up forms a much more professional look and many more placement options than the standard AWeber options. WP Subscriber sign up form options include lightbox overlays, footer optin forms, Facebook logins, and many more color and graphic choices.wpsubsciber product offer signup form

Although this premium plugin costs $47 for one site use and $97 for unlimited sites. It's designed to increase your sign up rate to help you capture the email addresses of the visitors you worked so hard to attract to your site.

And it integrates with all the popular email newsletter plaforms including, Aweber, GetResponse, Mailchimp, Turbo AutoResponder, Google Feedburner. WP Subscriber plugin page.

WP Subscribers has a 60-day money-back guarantee*. You can try it for up to two months to decide it's worth the cost. If you don't want it, they'll issue a full refund within that time frame.

*As a side note, a 30 or 60-day return period is what most reputable online products offer, anything less is a red flag in our opinion. Doesn't mean they're bad, but at least 30 days is an industry standard.

PROS - Many more sign up options than the standards offer by list servers like AWeber or GetResponse. Better looking forms and more placement options lead to capture emails from more visitors.

CONS - One-time charge of $47 for use on one site, $97 for use on unlimited sites.

Getting Traffic Is Hard - So Stay In Touch with Your Visitors!

Considering the time, effort and expensive we site owners go through to attract traffic (SEO, PPC, Social Media, Content Marketing, etc), it only makes sense to use one of these email and newsletter sign up options to get your visitors to opt in to receive future communications from you.

Recap Of Email Sign Up Tools

Each of the tools discussed here do slightly different things. Here's a quick recap about how they fit together:

Jetpack - A free suite of more than a dozen plugin tools in one package

  • Free and functional for both and site owners
  • Puts email sign up checkbox near the Comments form BUT you can only send your blog posts to these subscribers
  • The subscribers on this list can't be deleted or exported for use in email marketing campaigns

AWeber - An email marketing platform for creating a list of subscribers and communicating with them

  • Use AWeber to collect and organize your subscribers and their email addresses into customizable lists. You might create different lists based which site they came from, or subject matter within a site or sites, or how/when opted in, the product or free download they selected, etc.
  • AWeber has a limited selection of sign up forms, but their Web Form Plugin is worth installing because it does put a sign up checkbox at the Comment form
  • Use AWeber to creates newsletters or plain text emails, broadcast blog posts or other one-time communications to your subscriber list and use an Autoresponder to create a series of automatic emails that go out when someone signs up to something on your site (called a Follow Up series of emails)
  • AWeber has a collection of customizable sign up forms, but for more professional optin forms, consider investing in the WP Subscribers plugin below ($47 for one site, $97 for unlimited site installations)

WP Subscribers - Use this to add more subscriber signups to blog in conjunction with your AWeber (or other service) email lists.

  • Has a large portfolio of attractive and flexible optin forms to help you convert more of your site's visitors to subscribers of your email list(s)
  • Some of the options they offer - that don't come with AWeber - are popup lightboxes (on a timer, upon entry, exit, only on certain pages, etc), nice sidebar widget optins, footer optins and many fancier graphical choices than AWeber offers

How To Syndicate Content Automatically For Free

Pete Semple

Content Marketing Made Easy - Part One

The first phase of internet marketing was “SEO”, then came “Social Media Marketing”. Today’s internet marketing buzzword is “Content Marketing”. Here we'll conquer one of the biggest challenges of content marketing, how to syndicate your content.

"Another  'New Thing?' I’m Tired Of New Things!"

I know what you’re thinking, “Great, another new internet marketing concept that I have to learn. I just bought MySpace wallpaper!”

content marketing concepts

We hear you, this discipline can be exhausting. The “new” things never stop. It’s as though the internet never sleeps.

Content Examples

In the old days, Content was simply the articles in newspapers or stories in magazines. Content is what makes a publication worth reading. Content has been the backbone of media and advertising since before the internet.

Today Content is the copy on your website, your blog posts, articles, videos and PDFs. Basically it’s the stuff the search engine spiders crawl and the material your viewers read, download and watch.

What Is Content Marketing?

Content Marketing is using content for promotional purposes. Have you seen those boxes of text in magazines that look like mini articles? Those are called “advertorials”. They’re informational and usually written by experts, but they’re paid for by an advertiser and they’re written to get you to take action. Advertorials have been an effective Content Marketing tool for over a hundred years.

Already Content Marketing

Content Marketing ExamplesContent Marketing is not really new. Chances are you’re already doing Content Marketing as part of your SEO and Social Media marketing efforts.  “Content” is simply the stuff you share when you Like, Tweet or Blog. It’s the videos you submit to YouTube and it's the practice of uploading your articles to article directories.

What Is Content Syndication

Content syndication is loaning out the content you’ve created to other outlets to get more exposure and to help other media fill their space. Examples of content syndication are the Associated Press articles that appear in news sites or in your local newspaper.

Benefits of Content Syndication

Since creating content is time consuming and labor intensive it’s great to spread it as far and efficiently as possible. But finding guest blogging opportunities and submitting articles and videos to directories is time consuming and there’s no guarantee they’ll ever be seen.

Sharing your content with people who have expressed an interest in it is much more effective because these people are seeking this type of material in order to share it with interested viewers. This is the benefit of Content Syndication.

How To Syndicate Content Safely

RepostUs is a free service that automatically makes your pages and blog posts available to other publishers who may wish to share it.

The most important feature of their service is that it syndicates your content so that it can’t be changed by the next user.  All your text, photos and links are encoded so that when they are embedded in another site they remain exactly as they appear in your site.

In fact, if you make any changes or updates to your pages or posts those changes will immediately appear on all the other sites where your content is already embedded!

This isn’t the case when you share your content on article directories because there’s always the possibility a publisher will remove your links or change your material. Also, article directories don’t accept photos but photos on your site’s content remain when they are shared on third party sites that embed your content via

Content Sharing Plugins Available For Most Platforms has tools for WordPress, Tumblr, Blogger, TypePad, Drupal (and more) that will make your on-site content available through the website and through the dashboard of other users with the software on their websites.

RepostUs Publisher ToolsPublishers with the plugin (or addon, etc) installed will automatically see a stream of available articles in their admin area/dashboard. But not just any articles, the plugin tool actually offers content related to the other content on the host site.

Complete Share Statistics and Control

In the website you can see how many of times your content has been shared, how many impressions it has gained and even the sites where it exists. You can even block a site from embedding your material.

Have multiple sites? You can share and track multiple sites under one account while maintaining separate statistics for each one.

Makes Content Curation Easy

Although every webmaster engaged in marketing is encouraged to blog and write articles to keep their site fresh and attract visitors the truth not everyone has the time.RepostUs Stories Dashboard

Another aspect of adding fresh material is a way to bring your readers (and search engines) a variety of voices.

This has lead to the popularity of “Content Curation” which is simply picking an interesting variety other people’s material to share on your site. makes this simple because you’ll always have access to plenty of related articles from writers willing to share.

Here are some advantages of using

  • Easily make your content available to other publishers in related niches
  • Find potential new products and business partners
  • Keep an eye on competitors
  • Keep up with industry products, players and news
  • Easily add a new variety of voices and topics to your blog or site

Things To Be Aware Of

What’s the catch? There’s a lot of advertising. If your site is not ad heavy, the articles you get from will usually contain one or two square (250 x 250) ads.

But the ads shown are related to the material so they usually seem to fit in fine with the content and it’s a small price to pay for such a great free service.

Competitors See You (And You See Them)

But actually here are couple things to keep in mind – competitors in the same niche will also see exactly what you’re posting as soon as you put it out there and can easily copy your idea if not your content. But since you’ll be publishing first on your own site (a Content Marketing Best Practice) they could have found it there anyway.

And of course this is an easy way for you to keep tabs on articles in your industry too.  But in our opinion you might as well put it all out there because it’s going to get found anyway. And isn’t that the point of being online?

How To Get More From

Make New Acquaintances, Build Alliances

The fact that the related posts they suggest are very accurate makes it a great way to find new potential partners you can work with to cross sell, guest post, create an affiliate relationship with, cross-promote to each other’s email list or work together in another way.

Add Links To Your Other Content From Articles You Embed (Curate)

It’s actually possible to add text and links to the bottom of the articles you put on your site – though it’s not possible to change the content within the article, (nor do we think it would be ethical do so).

This presents a good opportunity to interlink your pages by adding a link to another page of your site that’s related to the topic. It’s usually a good idea to add a paragraph or two of text with the link.

We always do this respectfully by writing, “Thanks to [author name] for the great guest post above” to make it clear the new material is ours. Then we include a few thoughts of our own on the topic and at then end say something like, “For more information about [topic] see [page on our website]”.

Use Your Google Authorship

Repost Button-G AuthorshipInclude your first and last name on your content and be sure you are signed up for Google Authorship to increase the quantity and variety of sites with which you’re associated.

Two Plugins To Get More Out Of

Social Essentials is a WordPress plugin helps you maximize the exposure and traffic from content you share via because it embeds your social media share buttons on the bottom of the content that gets shared on other sites.

The Related Content plugin will automatically place links to related stories on your site at the bottom of the posts you embed (curate). This will help keep visitors on your site.

How Do Search Spiders See The Content?

Some say search engine spiders can’t see the text embedded, but when we run tests using search engine spider simulators the text appears to be visible to the spiders.

This tool is one of the the fastest, easiest and most effective ways to get your information, brand name, photos, inforgraphics and links embedded on other sites to bring in new viewers in related niches.

Two Easy Steps To Further Distribute Your Content Via RSS Syndication

Pete Semple

UPDATE 1-11-2014

The bulk URL-to-RSS site RSS Holder ( is no longer available. However, there are many ways to ping your URLs which is still a helpful way to get your backlinks indexed.

There are also paid link indexing services which will slowly index your links and show you when they were crawled by Google.

Maximize Your Existing Content and Links

You've probably spent a lot of time and money creating quality content for your site and distributing it to web 2.0 sites, article directories and other locations.Bulk Ping Mass RSS Submission Site logo

There's no reason your content has to sit there waiting to be found! There are two simple steps that distribute your content all over the web via RSS.

RSS Distribution Spreads Your Content Further

Submitting your content to RSS distribution sites make your content more widely available on RSS feed distribution sites and creates additional backlinks visible to visitors and search engines.

Submitting each link by hand to dozens of RSS distribution directories would be way too time consuming, but here we'll show you two sites that make it easy to consolidate all your content links and mass distribute them to dozens of RSS directories resulting in even more backlinks to attract search engines and traffic.

For Example

  1. Take existing RSS feed links and mass distribute them though one site
  2. Gather a collection of links, turn them into a single RSS feed, and mass distribute them on one site.

Mass Distribute Existing RSS Feeds:

  • Your Blog's RSS Feed --> Submit Once to Dozens of RSS Directories
  • Your Website's XML Sitemap Feed --> Submit Once to Dozens of RSS Directories
  • Web 2.0 sites (Squidoo, Tumblr, HubPages, etc.) and article directories (EzineArticles, GoArticles, etc.) RSS feeds --> Submit Once to Dozens of RSS Directories

Create An RSS Feed From Any List of Links:

  • List of Miscellaneous Backlinks --> Create A Single RSS Feed -->  Submit Once to Dozens of RSS Directories
  • Take A List of Any Backlinks, Article, PDF, PPT, Video or Bookmark URL submission list --> Create A Single RSS Feed -->  Submit Once to Dozens of RSS Directories

Here we'll tell you how to easily gather and consolidate all your content and submit mass submit them to dozens RSS distribution sites.

Easily Share Your Quality Content

We always recommend creating and sharing quality content online instead of using backlink trickery to increase your rankings and traffic.

But there is nothing tricky or "black hat" about further distributing your content via RSS feeds and directories. Here's what Google says about RSS in general on their own RSS feed site Google Feedburner:

Publisher Bottom Line: Feeds permit instant distribution of content and the ability to make it "subscribable."

A Quick "What Is RSS?"rss-icon-small

You probably already know what RSS is, but just to be clear as we move forward: RSS is the way to distribute a site's content. It's accessible via a specific URL or by clicking the familiar orange RSS button at right.

WordPress blogs have an RSS feed  ( and has many RSS feeds organized by topic (

Two Reasons To Use RSS Submission Sites To Promote Your Content

  •  You want to submit all the pages from your website or blog to RSS collection and distribution sites to make them available to people and sites looking for RSS feeds
  • You've submitted your content elsewhere such as articles, video, PDF or Infographs and to other sharing sites such as Squidoo, HubPages, etc. and you want to convert the resulting links to RSS feed links in order to increase the visibility to search engines and visitors

How To Get A List Of All The Links From Your Website or Blog

  • If you are using WordPress, the RSS feed for your blog posts (only, not pages) is found at This is the RSS feed for your blog posts only, it will not include your site's Pages.
  • To get a list of all Posts and Pages from your WordPress site you have to have an XML sitemap creator plugin installed. Then the link to all your Pages and Posts will be This will also work with any other type of site that uses an XML sitemap.
  • You'll only need to submit one of the above URLs - choose the the .xml link to submit all your site's pages and blog posts, or use the URL to submit only your blog posts.
  • Web 2.0 sites such as Squidoo, HubPages and Tumblr also have RSS feeds containing lists of your submitted content as do content sharing sites such as EzineArticles. See their instructions for how to find the RSS feed for your content (be sure to find the RSS for your account specifically and not the RSS for the main site).

To Remove Irrelevant Pages Before RSS Distribution

When you look at links in the options you'll see that it contains all the links on your site including pages such as About Us, Privacy Policy, Terms & Conditions, etc.

If you don't want to include these pages in the RSS feed you'll be mass distributing then highlight all the links, paste them into a spreadsheet and delete the irrelevant links. Then copy the remaining links and paste them into the RSS Holder site shown below to create one link to submit to the Bulk Ping RSS Submit page (not the BulkPing site!) discussed below.

Also Mass Distribute All Your Content Distribution Links Via RSS

In addition to submitting the RSS feeds of your website, blog and specific  content sharing sites  you can s  and submitting them to RSS directories, you'll probably also want to do the same with your content distribution.

Although there are site where you can convert one link at a time to an RSS style URL, this would be very time consuming to do a list of 30 article directory links where your content was just submitted, for example.

Instead to turn your multiple URLs Into a single RSS link you can use the site RSS Holder to create one XML link out of many separate URLs.

This site couldn't be any easier to use as you can see from the screenshot of the RSS Holder interface below. Once you're given the XML address of all the links, simply post it into the Bulk Ping Free RSS Submit Online tool mentioned below.

RSS Holder Creates one RSS Feed from Many URLs

Distribute Your RSS Feed To Dozens of Distribution Directories

Get Many More Backlinks and Visitors

These simple steps are worth doing because they will spread your content to sites, people and search engines far and wide and result in dozens if not hundreds of extra backlinks and visitors.

How To Set Target For Facebook Posts

Pete Semple

Now Facebook lets you "target" your posts by gender, relationship status, education, interested in, age, location and language. It's important to notice that this is a restriction option, not an expansion option. In other words, you can't reach out and find more single people or more people of a certain age, you can only have your post not appear in people's feeds that don't meet your criteria.

Why Restrict Who Can See Your Facebook Posts?

Here are some times when you might want to restrict who is able to see a post:

  • Promoting special events or sales limited to a certain geographic region
  • For offerings not applicable to all groups - products appealing to adults instead of children or men instead of women
  • Specific language materials - guidebooks in Italian to residents of Italy only
  • Regional news or events - update on city council race to specific city only
  • And so on for Eduction (promote grad school or GED products) and Relationship Status (exclude marrieds from Singles events)

Instructions for Setting Who Sees Which of Your Facebook Posts

One has to be logged in to Facebook and find the link to learn how to change the settings for who can see what posts so we've copied them below.

How To Target For Facebook Posts

Add targeting to your Page posts so only the most relevant people will see them in their news feeds. Unlike when you limit your Page's audience, adding news feed targeting does not affect who can see the post on your Page. Hide posts that you don't want anyone to see when they visit your Page.

To add targeting:

  1. Before you publish your post, click the target in the sharing tool.

  1. Click Add Targetingand choose one or more filters:
    • Gender
    • Relationship Status
    • Education
    • Interested In
    • Age
    • Location
    • Language
  2. Click the options on the right side to choose who you want to target your post to. For example, when targeting by gender, Male is automatically selected. Click Male and select Female to target your post to women's news feeds instead.

  1. When you're done adding filters, click Post.

As you add filters, the number of people your post is targeted to will update next to Targeted to:. The more filters you add, the fewer people you'll target. The minimum number of people you can target your post to is 20.
