How to Get Seen in Local Search Results

Pete Semple

About Local Search for Brick and Mortar Stores

If you're a brick and mortar location who wants to get found in Google's local search results you know it's not as easy as it used to be.

Knowing how to add your business name, phone number, address and website to Google Places is not enough because now everybody knows how to do that.

Do Backlinks Count In Local Search?

Yes, and there's also a special kind that are important for local. Traditional backlinks never hurt and another way to rank your local physical location is to get your businesses local listing details in as many business listing sites as possible. Start with sites like yp.com and expand outward.

How to Find Local Business Listing Sites

Here are the top five:

  1. Superpages
  2. Citysearch
  3. Yelp
  4. Yahoo Local
  5. InsiderPages

Then use tools like Alexa.com and do a search of "[your business category][your city]" for example "Dry Cleaners Denver" and take a close look at the business listings site that appear in the Page One search results.

Should You Pay To List Your Business Locally?

Only if you have the money and you've done due diligence, however, it's not necessary. In the balance of time and money buying a powerful listing can save you the time of doing the legwork of posting dozens of listings manually.

Buyer Beware

But there are many (many) sites that will take your money but have very little actual authority in the ranking sense. Only pay for listings that are talked about online as a known place to be. Don't just take a site's word for it.

If you have more time than money, every little listing helps. Do a couple dozen a day or a week and it will have impact over time. Track your progress in a spreadsheet so you can see your accomplishments.

Also, after your listing is approved, take the url of the page your listing appears on and paste in Linklicious.me (sign up for free account) to be sure it gets indexed.

How to Submit Your Website to Directories

This is not for local search, but for your website in general to get more weight with Google use a tool called easysubmits.com.

It's push button directory submission. And to feel like you're getting the most from your efforts click the page numbers along the top and start by submitting to the many Page Rank 3, 4 and 5 directories in there. Don't worry about going out of order because Easy Submit tracks the sites you've already submitted to every time you log in.

Hope that helps!
